This Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement sets out the steps Waste Clearance Hackney has taken, and is continuing to take, to ensure that modern slavery and human trafficking are not present in our business operations or supply chains. We are committed to acting ethically and with integrity in all our relationships and to implementing and enforcing effective systems and controls to safeguard human rights.
Waste Clearance Hackney provides waste collection, disposal and recycling services to households, businesses and community organisations within Hackney and surrounding areas. Our activities require us to work with a range of suppliers and contractors, including vehicle and equipment providers, waste transfer and recycling facilities, outsourcing partners, office and protective equipment suppliers, and cleaning and maintenance contractors.
We recognise that certain parts of the waste, logistics and facilities management sectors can be vulnerable to modern slavery risks, particularly where there are lower-skilled or temporary roles. We therefore actively assess and monitor our supply chains to reduce these risks and promote safe and fair working conditions.
Waste Clearance Hackney has a zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of modern slavery, forced labour, child labour and human trafficking. This applies to our own operations and to every organisation that forms part of our supply chain. We expect all suppliers, contractors and business partners to uphold the same high standards and to comply with all relevant laws and regulations relating to modern slavery and human rights.
Any breach of this policy is taken extremely seriously and may result in immediate termination of contracts, reporting to the relevant authorities and the implementation of corrective actions to protect affected individuals. All managers are responsible for promoting this policy and ensuring it is communicated clearly throughout their teams.
We conduct due diligence on new suppliers and review existing suppliers on a risk-based basis. As part of this process, we assess the nature of the goods or services provided, the geographical location, the use of agency or temporary labour and any previous concerns or adverse information. Suppliers who present higher risks are subject to enhanced checks.
Our supplier audits may include requesting information about labour practices, reviewing employment documentation, and, where appropriate, conducting site visits or remote assessments. We seek assurances that workers have freely chosen their employment, receive at least the legal minimum wage, have clear written terms, and are not subject to intimidation, debt bondage or confiscation of identity documents.
Where issues are identified, we work with suppliers to agree corrective action plans and target dates. Persistent non-compliance or refusal to cooperate may result in suspension or termination of the business relationship.
Waste Clearance Hackney encourages all employees, agency workers, suppliers and other stakeholders to report any concerns relating to modern slavery or human trafficking. Concerns can be raised directly with line managers, with senior management, or through our confidential whistleblowing channels. Reports may be made anonymously and will be treated in strict confidence wherever possible.
We do not tolerate victimisation or retaliation against anyone who raises a concern in good faith. All reports are promptly reviewed and investigated, with appropriate remedial action taken where necessary, which may include engaging external specialists or notifying law enforcement bodies.
We provide relevant training and guidance to managers, supervisors and staff who are involved in recruitment, procurement or supplier management. This includes awareness of the signs of modern slavery, how to respond to concerns and the importance of maintaining transparent employment and supply chain practices.
We are committed to continuous improvement and regularly review our policies, contractual clauses and procurement procedures to strengthen protections for workers. We aim to work collaboratively with suppliers to share good practice and promote responsible labour standards.
This Modern Slavery Statement is reviewed at least annually by the senior management of Waste Clearance Hackney to ensure it remains accurate, effective and aligned with evolving legal requirements and ethical expectations. As part of this review, we consider any incidents reported, results of supplier audits, staff feedback and changes in our business activities or supply chains.
We will update this Statement where necessary to reflect developments in our approach, including any new measures introduced to reduce risks and improve transparency. Waste Clearance Hackney remains fully committed to preventing modern slavery in all its forms and to upholding the dignity and rights of every person connected to our operations.
